Most of the tours offer special discounts too! Google “shopping tours” the next time you are in a fashionable side of town to find a bonus on wheels.

Global Shopping

Every year a global trend surfaces, and some part of the world is deemed fashionable. This is usually a result of a creative development team’s or a designer’s traveling to some cool interesting place to find inspiration for a collection. Then the rest of us live vicariously by wearing expensive pieces from specialty stores where we’ll pay more because it is a silk from China or beaded in Africa.

Find your own runway-worthy trends while on vacation. You can move past the souvenir shops and T-shirts that say “I Love Beijing.” On my trip to Puerto Rico, I found the most darling cotton gauze ruffle peasant dresses with embroidered rosettes for my nieces. The same dresses were sold in high-end boutiques for close to $135 each, while I paid maybe $30 for both!

You don’t need to go abroad to get great indigenous goods. You might find a Native American shop with great beaded pieces in Arizona or beautiful silk pajamas in San Francisco’s Chinatown. In fact, you don’t even need to leave home—check out your city’s ethnic neighborhoods.
